Coming to Worcester

by linnea - September 29, 2008 9:21am

It was an exciting weekend for me here in Worcester. It started out with a walk through of my new condo, followed by my closing. This event has been seven months in the making, and for a while I wasn’t sure it was ever going to happen. But it did, and on Friday I officially became a citizen of Worcester, Massachusetts.

I spent the weekend cleaning and moving furniture into my new home on Vernon Hill. I purchased the property from a bank, so the place had been vacant for about two years. The amount of grime that can build up in two years is pretty amazing, but thanks to family and friends I got a good start on the process of settling in. Moving always shows you who your true friends are, especially when you do it three times in a year.

The utilities were easy to switch over to my name, the insurance is set to go, now I just have to change my mailing address on all of my accounts, get a new license from the registry, and of course I better hurry up and transfer my voter registration so I can get in on time for the elections next month.

I’m sure other things will pop up that need to get done, but right now I’m just trying to focus on settling in, and tackling one project at a time. First comes cleaning, then comes organizing, then painting, finish the moving, then the arranging, hanging pictures, etc, really making the place home. New flooring in the kitchen and pantry will have to wait, as will the painting of the kitchen cupboards, which I’m already dreading. I guess the key is to tackle small things so it doesn’t feel so overwhelming.

Oh yeah, and there’s the whole paying the mortgage thing, or in my case, paying the mortgage, the condo fees, the taxes, and the utilities. It’s a little nerve-racking as a new homeowner.

So finally, after all these years of home-hopping in and around Worcester, I’m official. I’m going to have to get used to the sounds of the city all over again as I sleep at night. Of course, I already appreciate how easy it is to hop on the highway, and how much shorter my commute will be. It will be great to be able to run to the store and just be gone a few minutes, or go out to meet my friends and not have an hour of driving to deal with. I can’t say enough good things about the City of Worcester trash bags either. I know I’ll probably have some complaints as I really settle in as a citizen, but really you can’t beat those trash bag prices. Not to mention the curbside pick-up for recycling is so unbelievably convenient.

So other than my own little journey taking place this weekend we also have our official launch for Real Worcester today. We have a great crew of contributing bloggers lined up to bring you the low-down on what’s going on city-wide, so be sure to check back for the daily updates. We are also still looking for more contributors, so if anyone is interested please feel free to email me at editor@realworcester.com and let me know what your Real Worcester is all about.

Thanks for checking us out, and come back soon!
