Friday marks the 10th Annual World Smile Day. The holiday was declared by the late Harvey Ball, Worcester native and creator of the smiley face. In celebration of this annual event, the Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation will be sending 600 smiley cookies to soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. City of Worcester Congressman Jim McGovern, the Worcester Historical Museum, and WCRN Radio supported the effort.

The Worcester smiles, along with thank you notes, will be mailed from the main branch of the Worcester Post Office at 10 a.m. on Friday, October 3. The group has been working on the project for several months and this is just one of the events they hold every year, on the first Friday of October, to commemorate World Smile Day.

Harvey Ball was a World War II veteran and reservist. His theme for World Smile Day is “Do an act of kindness. Help one person smile.”

Also going on this weekend is the opening reception for “Joseph Farbrook: Nostalgia for Neverwas,” being held Friday evening from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The event takes places at the Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts. The works on display are the work of Joseph Farbrook, artist and assistant professor of Interactive Media at WPI. The pieces are a mixture of old and new technologies and styles, and the event is free to the public.

On Saturday, October 4, the DZian Gallery at 65 Water Street will be hosting LOVE: A Night to Benefit the Animals at Maple Farm Sanctuary from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The event is $ 35 per ticket, and guests will enjoy drinks, appetizers, vegan catering, and animal artwork, with a silent auction and complimentary valet parking.

The proceeds benefit the Maple Farm Sanctuary, a home for neglected and abused animals of Massachusetts.

But what do you think?

For an event that’s based entirely on a logo (the smiley face), the World Smile Foundation has a really ugly logo.

    Is that too cynical??
