This is Worcester

My first week as a city of Worcester resident has come and gone. The week included endless trips up and down the stairs to my third story condo with hands full; filling out my voter registration form; changing my address on pretty much everything; buying my first official City of Worcester trash bags; and finally figuring out how to get to the nearest gas station.

I’m happy to say that since I’ve bought my home I’ve already made huge improvements. The wallpaper has come down, the primer is up, the floors have been scrubbed, the cabinets have been cleaned, and the windows washed. There’s so much more to go, but I’ve finally given in to the fact that it will take time.

Between moving, cleaning, working, schooling, and Real Worcester it’s no wonder I haven’t had time for much else this week. When I glance back at this list it seems that perhaps this is enough, but for the first time in a long time I’ve been intrigued by the possibilities that exist outside my doors. Maybe it’s because I can now hear the sounds of the city pouring in through my windows, or maybe it has to do with the fact that so many places where I want to be are just minutes away.

I think it’s a combination of these, but I also think it has to do with what’s going on right here on Real Worcester. Never before have I been surrounded by so many proud, passionate, talented, and optimistic Worcesterites. Thanks to a blog by Holmes I decided to venture out and check out Ralph’s Karaoke night, and thanks to Gabe’s music listings I decided to check out a show Friday evening. I also hit up one of our top BYOB spots, Tortilla Sam’s. Over the weekend I even had some of my favorite sushi from Baba, the winner of the People’s Choice award at the Worcester’s Best Chef competition last week.

Overall it’s been a pretty good week. It couldn’t be perfect of course. The bad news is that thanks to a new regulation supported by 9 out of 11 of our City Councilors, my housewarming party may have to wait. According to the “unruly gathering” ordinance the police would be allowed to hold the owner’s of a property liable for disturbances involving more than five people. Maybe this is specifically aimed at college students, but as a new citizen I can’t help but question the thought process behind it. Lucky for me I have people like Scott Zoback and Buck Paxton to keep me abreast of any new developments.
