The New and Improved “Y” on Main Street

by - October 13, 2008 9:03am

The YMCA on Main Street just completed a very large renovation project. They celebrated on October 2nd with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. In the last few weeks I have wanted to get back to the gym, I was wasting my money doing a weight loss program but other than the 8 hours a day I am standing at work I do not move at all. There was a time when that was what my life was centered around, last year Neil and I tried Auburn Sports and Wellness on RT 20. The biggest issue with that was the distance; it was only 8 miles but very much out of the way to work in the early morning hours or in the evening. We scored a great deal for the membership fees at the time and we still wasted the membership.

So just last week I was listening to all the great things going on at the new and improved YMCA. I had always liked working out at the “Y” because it is more family and less meat market, and my neighbor mentioned wanting to join a gym. I make my way over to the Y, which is only about a mile down the road from my home. I went in the main door and Angela who works at the front desk was welcoming and helpful. I mentioned that I am a student (nontraditional, but a student none the less) and I read online the membership was $38.00 a month. She quickly jumped to it and stated she was not having any students paying that much for a membership and was able to get the price down to $25.00 a month. SCORE! So I immediately starting filling out the paperwork and became a member for the Central Community Branch YMCA. I do believe with the student membership you are able to use the two city branches being Central Community Branch and the Greendale Branch.

The updated facility is fabulous; it can compete and blow past many high end gyms in the area. New Precor Ellipticals and Lifestyle Treadmills, that are each equipped with 15 inch flat screens loaded with every cable channel you could ask for. A large rock climbing wall which hosts open climb times Monday-Friday from 6:30-9:30pm. The Woman’s locker room takes up most of the lower level, with a sauna and steam room. There are three racquetball courts and a couple squash courts. A large lap pool that always has at least one lap open to members around the lessons. The weights and nautilus machines are all new and clean.

I give the new facility 2 thumbs up. Membership and amenities listed here on the website.

As always the YMCA of Central Massachusetts is made up of caring employees and volunteers that serve over 30,000 men, woman, and children through out Central Massachusetts. All people are welcome regardless of race, income and ability to pay. The YMCA of Central Massachusetts serves over 800 school aged children in one of its many programs whether it is pre-school or Schools-Out. The new and improved “flagship” branch with its over $5 million dollars in renovations is now able to serve the ever changing community it serves in the urban core of Worcester.

I’ve been in there once, though it’s not where I usually go. It does look great.
