George’s Coney Island is a true Worcester landmark. Founded in 1918, and still located at its original 158 Southbridge Street location, the business is still run by George’s family.
The inside of Coney Island is full of wooden booths, complete with carvings from guests of years past. The counter accomodates a long line of customers quickly and efficiently, and the prices assure the dogs continue to be one of Worcester’s favorite bargains.
The landmark hot dog sign on the outside of the building draws photographers from all over the world. The 60 foot sign was added in 1940 and is an image that conjurs happy memories from hot dog lovers all over the area.
Of course you can’t mention the history of Coney Island without mentioning the dogs themselves. The delicious treats have continuously won best of Worcester awards, not to mention they’re easy on the wallet. Whether you eat your dogs plain, with ketchup, mustard, or the special Coney sauce, you’re sure to enjoy. Don’t forget the pickle, Polar soda, and Wachusett chips to complete your meal!
