To Every Problem There’s an Answer that’s Simple, Fast, and Wrong

In the past few months, there have been several stabbings in Worcester, including three fatalities. As reported in today’s Telegram, the Worcester police, in response, are proposing that knives with blades longer than an inch-and-a-half be illegal. There are a few exceptions, including knives used for hunting, fishing, or work. As a guy who occasionally need to take apart a computer, I can make a business case for carrying my Swiss Army knife (with its two-and-a-half inch blade). I shouldn’t have to, however.

The Second Amendment offers no protections here, but common sense ought to do so. Violent crime is serious business, but criminalizing the possession of jackknives does little to make us safer. As noted later in the Telegram article, the Worcester police chief is also proposing an increased police presence on the city streets, an effort that is much more likely to defuse some of the hot spots outside bars where some of the stabbings have occurred.

But what do you think?

  1. Last I checked the act of stabbing someone and causing bodily harm is illegal.

These thugs don’t stop and NOT stab someone because it is illegal. Therefore what sort of thinking is behind thinking that making the blades illegal will stop the illegal action of stabbing someone!

Nothing but lip service and actions that get no result from the WPD in this case.
