Pirates Outgun The Sharks

Nathan Gerbe must like Worcester. The last time he was skating at the DCU Center he was leading the Boston College Eagles to a 4-3 overtime victory against Miami of Ohio to send his Boston College Eagles to the Frozen Four in Denver. In the final 2 games of the tournament Gerbe tallied 5 goals en route to a BC National Championship.
This spring Gerbe broke hearts on Chestnut Hill by announcing he would forgo his senior year at BC and inked a 3 year deal with the Buffalo Sabres. So last night Gerbe took to the DCU Center ice with his Portland Pirate team mates to face the Worcester Sharks for the first time this season.
Portland got on the board first sliding one past the Sharks Thomas Griess, but Worcester answered right back with a tally of their own less than 20 seconds later. As the first period wound down Gerbe made his acquaintance with the net for the first of his eventual three goals on the night. Portland extended their lead to 3-1 midway thru the second period with a power play goal. Worcester was able to keep it close as Steven Zalewski notched his first goal of the season late in the period.
The Sharks tied the game early in the third period with a Mike Morris goal, but the rest of the third period belonged to Gerbe who picked up an errant Sharks pass at center ice and beat Greiss on a breakaway. Worcester peppered Pirates netminder Jhonas Enroth with 15 shots in the final frame and had a few scoring bids thwarted in the final minutes. Gerbe notched the hat trick with an easy empty net goal with 14 ticks left on the clock.
