Hubbardston’s prankster

Hubbardston – sometimes called “Hubbardstown” in the old documents – has had an interesting saga since it was incorporated in 1767. It has had some brushes with history, as in 1788 during the Shays’ Rebellion when Capt. Abner (or Adam) Wheeler of Hubbardston led a contingent of 80 armed men to Worcester, where they shut down the courthouse to keep farm mortgages from being foreclosed. He was pardoned under the general amnesty proclaimed by Gov. John Hancock a few years later.
