Whalebone Farmhouse @ Vincent’s 3/6/2010

After a great dinner at Bocado with a few local and out-of-town friends, we drove up the street to hear Whalebone Farmhouse at Vincent’s.
The joint was jumpin’ as usual for a Saturday night, and WF seemed the perfect band for the dim wooden shanty, with their largely acoustic, sort of jugband style. The band is made up of drums, upright bass, acoustic guitar, harmonica, and dual vocals.
I really liked their down home, but funky take on the Grateful Dead’s Mar’s Hotel classic, “Loose Lucy,” and the tight arrangement and harmonies on the old Sam Phillips’ tune “Mystery Train,” made famous by Elvis, Carl Perkins, and The Band. Later they had some fun with “Put the Lime in the Coconut,” as the bartender acted out the making of some kind of tequila drink in a coconut as they added the ingredients in verse. Good times!
